The kitchen in this old farmhouse was part of the original structure dating to the early 1830’s. Although the structure had been updated several times during the twentieth century, the last meaningful renovation took place approximately 50 years ago in the 1970’s.
Aside from outdated cabinetry and well worn wide pine floor boards, the entire wing of the house was woefully under insulated, causing a drafty environment that only the most aggressive supplement of woodstove heat could tame during the long winter months. The only solution was a complete renovation down to bare studs and floor joists and to begin anew.
After closed-cell icynene insulation sealed out all drafts coming from the dirt floor crawl space beneath the kitchen wing of the farmhouse which provided an insulation value exceeding R-50, next a subfloor and radiant heat were installed. Finally, 12″ travertine tile completed the new kitchen floor. Conestoga Wood Specialties provided the kitchen cabinets at a fraction of the cost even taking into account the necessity of assembling the pre-engineered boxes and drawers, and installing the drawer slides and pulls.
